What Is Path of Building (PoB)? The Ultimate Tool for Planning Path of Exile Builds

What is Path of Building (PoB)? – A Complete Guide for Path of Exile Players

If you’re jumping into Path of Exile 3.26 or coming over from POE2, you’ve likely heard about Path of Building (PoB)—the tool top players use to plan, analyze, and optimize their builds. This guide will explain what PoB is, how to use it effectively, and why it’s an essential part of any Secrets of the Atlas playthrough.

 What is Path of Building?

Path of Building—often abbreviated as PoB—is a free, standalone tool developed by the Path of Exile community that allows players to theorycraft, plan, and optimize builds in a way the in-game interface simply cannot support.

Originally created by Openarl and now maintained by the community via the Community Fork, Path of Building has become the standard tool for every serious PoE player, from casuals who want to follow a reliable leveling guide to veterans pushing Uber bosses with precision-tuned builds.

What Exactly Does It Do?

PoB gives you an interactive interface where you can:

  • Create or import a build and see all character stats—including Life, Energy Shield, Resistances, Armor, Evasion, and Effective HP.

  • Visualize and edit your Passive Skill Tree, including Ascendancy, Cluster Jewels, and Keystones.

  • Equip items, including Uniques, Rares with custom affixes, crafted gear, or simulate your own ideal upgrades.

  • Manage Skill Gem links, Support Gems, and trigger mechanics (e.g., Cast when Damage Taken, Arcanist Brand).

  • Use the Configuration tab to simulate boss fights, map mods, flask uptime, buffs/debuffs, and conditional triggers for realistic DPS calculations.

  • View damage breakdowns (hit, ailment, DoT), critical strike chances, penetration, leech, and more.

  • Simulate mercenary support mechanics (manually), aura stacking, and synergy for patch 3.26 mechanics.

Why It’s Better Than In-Game Tooltips

The in-game tooltips in Path of Exile are limited, often misleading, and fail to account for conditional modifiers. For example:

  • A tooltip may show 50k damage, but in PoB, accounting for penetration, ailments, exposure, and boss resistances, it might translate to 250k actual DPS.

  • It also doesn’t show how survivable you are in real-world encounters like Uber Shaper or Pinnacle boss fights—PoB gives you that clarity via EHP and mitigation layers.

Who Should Use PoB?

Everyone. If you’re following a league starter build, designing your own Smite Slayer, testing a Mercenary aura setup, or just wondering if upgrading your gloves is worth the Chaos Orb—PoB gives you answers.

Whether you’re a new player trying to follow a guide or a veteran looking to simulate an entire build path from level 1 to Uber Maven, PoB empowers you to:

  • Plan ahead and avoid wasting resources

  • Compare multiple builds

  • Test gear upgrades safely

  • Understand the true mechanics behind damage and survivability

Why PoB Matters (Even for Beginners)

  • Accuracy over the iffy in‑game UI — PoB calculates hit chance, DPS, and Effective Hit Points with detail

  • Importable build links — Many builds come with PoB exportable codes (aka Pastebin or GitHub) you can load instantly

  • Plan before you spend — With the option to create and manage loadout and calculation base on passive and equipment, you can plan your build, or find way to make it better before starting with the league.
