Lightning Spear Amazon Build Guide – Path of Exile 2 Build Guide
The Lightning Spear Amazon is currently one of the most dominant mapping builds and best amazon build in poe2, particularly after the significant improvements introduced in patch 0.2.0f. With its newly reduced base attack time and improved responsiveness, Lightning Spear has surged to the top of the meta — providing both lightning-fast clear speed and reliable single-target damage in Cruel and endgame maps.
The core mechanic centers around consuming Frenzy Charges to split the primary projectile of Lightning Spear into homing secondary arcs. These arcs automatically chain to nearby enemies, making the skill exceptionally smooth and efficient for clearing grouped monsters.
Why Lightning Spear Is Meta in Patch 0.2.0f
In the 0.2.0f update, Lightning Spear received one of the most meaningful quality-of-life changes:
Its base attack time was reduced from 3 seconds to 1.5 seconds, doubling its cast responsiveness.
It now feels far less clunky and much more in line with the pacing of an Action RPG, addressing previous feedback that gameplay was too slow and “Souls-like.”
Combined with support gem reworks and Charm improvements, this makes Lightning Spear a perfect choice for players seeking a snappy, satisfying, and highly effective clearing build.
When to Transition Into Lightning Spear
Despite its endgame power, Lightning Spear requires a few key components before it reaches its potential. You should delay building around it until you have:
Completed the second Trial of Chaos
Entered Cruel Difficulty
Until then, use Bow or a slower version of Lightning Spear combine with some other skills like Primal Strikes for a “Combo” playstyle – generally slower, but still viable following GGG’s “vision”
This does not mean Lightning Spear cannot be used for leveling earlier, but it would require a lot of combination, or may feel a little slower as expected. Lightning Spear is much more enjoyable after Cruel Difficulty

Defensive Setup and Progression
Begin the campaign using a Life + Evasion defensive layer. This gives early access to gear, supports faster leveling, and keeps you mobile.
Transition into a Hybrid Life/Energy Shield + Evasion setup in Cruel and beyond. This opens up the use of Ghost Dance, Energy Shield Auras, and broader scaling options, giving you both mitigation and sustain.
Core and Recommended Uniques
Strongly Recommended:
Tangletongue – Adds shock duration and scaling potential, especially useful for multi-hit interactions from Lightning Spear.
Lycosidae – Removes the need for Accuracy Rating, allowing you to ignore Accuracy scaling completely — ideal for hybrid defense setups.
Leveling Progression
Early Game Skill Setup
Lightning Spear + Primal Strikes (Shock + Burst Damage from Melee)
Storm Lance: Some Tick Damage
Swapping to Lightning Spear: Gear Checkpoint
Lightning Spear is generally slow and depend on gear to be good. Until several key gear and progression checkpoints are met. The build remains passive-tree compatible throughout, meaning the swap is fully dependent on gear rather than a respec.
Only switch to Lightning Spear after you have:
Second Ascendancy Notable: Penetrate (grants essential elemental scaling)
A Spear with a high Accuracy Rating (to consistently hit)
Combat Frenzy (for Frenzy Charge generation)
Attempting to swap early leads to frustrating underperformance. Stick with Glacial Bolt + Artillery Ballista through most of Cruel and possibly into early Endgame.
The true power spike begins after acquiring your third Ascendancy Notable: Elemental Infusion, which causes your Frenzy Charges to amplify both damage and clear speed substantially.
Aura Setup and Spirit Management
The Lightning Spear Amazon uses multiple Auras and support mechanics to bolster offense, generate Frenzy Charges, and stay alive during intense combat situations.
Core Auras:
- Herald of Thunder
Lightning Infusion (linked to Herald of Ice): Grants Innervate on kill, adding bonus Lightning Damage and enhancing clear speed.
Charge Generation:
- Combat Frenzy (Early Game/ Campaign) – Use in combine with Electrocute and Neural Overload, for a temporary Charge generation.
Cast on Critical (Endgame): Once you have 150+ Spirit and Tangletongue, switch to this setup for more consistent charge uptime, especially against bosses.
Defensive Aura:
Ghost Dance: Unlocks after you invest into Subterfuge Mask and wear a high Energy Shield Helmet. It restores Energy Shield on evade, providing strong sustain against chip damage.
- Wind Dancer: Increase Evasion Rating
Aura Support Options
You can further enhance your Auras by supporting them with:
Precision: Increases Accuracy Rating and Critical Strike Chance.
Cannibalism: Boosts offensive effectiveness of a linked Aura.
⚠️ Keep in mind: both of these support gems require 10–15 extra Spirit. If you’re Spirit-starved, prioritize Herald of Ice and Ghost Dance, and delay the use of support gems until you acquire more Spirit.
Spirit Scaling Tips:
Spirit is a key stat for this build.
Look for it on your:
Body Armour
Amulet
Skill Usage & Combat Rotation
Mastering your skill rotation is key to unlocking the full potential of the Lightning Spear Amazon. The build operates differently depending on whether you’re clearing maps or facing high-health targets like bosses and Rare monsters. Here’s how to handle both scenarios effectively.
Map Clearing Strategy
Clearing maps with Lightning Spear is simple, fluid, and explosive once the right setup is in place:
Cast Lightning Spear once per screen or when entering a new area.
Keep moving to charge up Volt stacks. Once you hit 20+ stacks, your movement-based passives significantly boost clear speed.
When facing tankier Rares mid-map, walk close to them and plant a Storm Lance directly on top of them. This sets up a chain reaction that instantly deletes them.
Equip a Sapphire Jewel with “2% Mana Gained on Kill” to completely solve mana sustain while clearing. This allows uninterrupted pacing with no need for flasks or mana regen investment.
This loop ensures you maintain momentum while effortlessly detonating screen-sized packs.
Boss & Rare Encounter Rotation (Campaign)
A combination of Storm Lance and Lighting Spear, Occasionally stick in some Primal Fury for some Lightning Exposure
Ascendancy Choices
Your Ascendancy selections define the late-game power of the Lightning Spear Amazon. Each node chosen synergizes with key mechanics of this build, from Accuracy-based scaling to elemental conversion and Frenzy Charge interactions.
Critical Strike
This node is essential for unlocking your full damage potential with Lightning Spear. It maximizes your Critical Hit Chance, scaling directly from your Accuracy Rating. For optimal effect, engage enemies from close range, as Accuracy-based crit chance diminishes with distance. This can be checked through the Skill Menu
- Estimated Main Hand Critical Chance From Hit Chance
Penetrate
One of the most important transitions in this build. Penetrate turns local weapon Accuracy Rating into Added Physical Damage, which then gets converted via Call of the Brotherhood and Herald of Ice. It also simplifies gearing—you can now prioritize Accuracy rolls on weapons instead of chasing high flat physical numbers.
Elemental Infusion
This node is the turning point of the build. It enhances projectile attacks (including Lightning Spear and Storm Lance) with additional elemental damage based on consumed charges. Most importantly, it enables on-hit effects like Innervate from Lightning Infusion, significantly boosting both AoE and single-target performance.
Predatory Instinct
A key node for boss fights, Predatory Instinct adds high single-target scaling, allowing you to comfortably handle Map Bosses, Pinnacle encounters, and Trial bosses alike.
For Ascendancy point 1 – 4 You can optionally go full Accuracy Scaling straight to In For The Kill if you acquired enough gear, otherwise, a combination of Elemental Infusion and Critical Strike is also viable
Passive Tree and Attribute Management
Attribute Strategy
Meet Requirements First: Allocate just enough Intelligence and Dexterity to satisfy your gear, skill gem, and support gem requirements.
Invest Remainder into Strength: This increases your maximum Life, giving you better survivability, especially during leveling and early Cruel.
Respec When Needed: Use Gold at The Hooded One or Doryani to respec Attribute nodes. This helps adapt to gear or skill changes mid-campaign without penalty.
Leveling Passive Tree
Before using Herald of Ice, consider some Lightning Skill nodes
During the campaign (while running Lightning Arrow + Lightning Rod / or a Slower Lightning Spear):
Focus on % increased Attack Damage and Elemental Damage nodes.
Prioritize Accuracy Rating and Attack Speed to speed up your map clear.
Avoid speccing into Critical Strike Chance or Multiplier until you unlock your first Ascendancy. They don’t provide enough early value without scaling gear.
Once you unlock your Ascendancy: Critical Strike, respec the starting zone into Accuracy-based Critical Pathing. This is when you begin transitioning toward Lightning Spear as your core skill.
Spirit Management
Transitioning into the full Lightning Spear rotation requires:
Enough Spirit to sustain the following:
Herald of Thuner
Combat Frenzy
You’ll need at least +50 Spirit, ideally from a combination of your Amulet and Body Armour.
Don’t forget to equip a Sapphire with “2% mana gained on kill” to solve your Mana sustain during clearing.
A “Hack” To Spirit
During my leveling process, I acquired Font of Power. This just provide free Spirit. This item can also enable the usage of several auras pretty early in the campaign, significantly improve your leveling process.
The downside is that it can feel a little squishy.
Jewel Optimization
Jewels offer massive scaling and utility. Look for the following modifiers to min-max your Lightning Spear build:
% increased Critical Damage Bonus
% increased Critical Damage Bonus with Spears
% increased Critical Hit Chance
% increased Elemental Damage
% increased Cold Damage
Damage Penetrates #% Lightning Resistance
% increased Energy Shield
% increased Freeze Buildup
These synergize with your Storm Lance, and Lightning Spear combo, dramatically increasing your single-target output while maintaining strong map clear.
Lightning Spear Amazon Build Guide Stat Priorities
Proper stat optimization is the difference between a smooth campaign clear and constant frustration. Below is a breakdown of Offensive and Defensive stat priorities that directly impact the performance and survivability of your build.
Offensive Scaling
A generally acceptable spear that can carry you through Campaign. Doesn’t have Accuracy, but it’s a random drop (With Corruption from Act III Questline)
Your weapon provides the core base damage for Lightning Spear, Storm Lance, and Glacial Bolt. These affixes should be prioritized on weapons, jewels, and gear:
+ to Accuracy Rating
: Directly scales both Hit Chance and Critical Strike Chance due to the Accuracy-based Critical mechanic.% increased Physical Damage
: Boosts the base physical portion before elemental conversions, important when scaling via Call of the Brotherhood.+ to Critical Damage Bonus
: Increases critical multipliers; scales especially well with Frenzy Charge usage.+ to Fire, Cold, Lightning and Physical Damage to Attacks
: Adds flat elemental and physical values—very effective with high attack speed.% increased Critical Damage Bonus
: Stacks with the above, further boosting critical burst potential.+ to Level of all Projectile Gems
: Increases damage scaling and utility for Lightning Spear and Storm Lance.% increased Attack Speed
: Improves overall responsiveness and DPS.Gain % of Physical Damage as Extra Fire, Cold or Lightning
: Converts base damage into elemental scaling—synergizes with Elemental Infusion.#% increased Damage
: General damage multiplier, effective across all damage types.+ to Dexterity
: Improves Accuracy and is required for equipping high-tier spears and crossbows.% increased Chance to Shock
: Helps apply Innervate and increases damage taken by shocked enemies.
Defensive Scaling
While your offensive output scales rapidly with the right gear, survivability is just as important in Path of Exile 2’s harder zones. Prioritize the following defensive stats:
+% to Fire, Cold, Lightning, and Chaos Resistance
: Ensure all Elemental Resistances are capped at 75%. Don’t overlook Chaos Resistance for Cruel+ content.+ to Maximum Life
: Always important, especially early-to-mid campaign where Life stacking is your primary defense.Evasion Rating
: Your main defense layer. Helps avoid direct hits, but it can feel “spiky” when RNG doesn’t roll in your favor.Energy Shield
: Supports Ghost Dance, enabling frequent small recoveries after avoiding hits.Freeze & Chill Effects
: These help slow enemies, preventing rapid damage chains and giving you room to reposition.
What’s Next?
This build generally introduces the Lightning Spear Progression throughout campaign, while it has potential for end-game content, there are some other very interesting spin up of this build out there. One example is Herald of Ice Lightning Spear with the utilisation of this Unique “Call of the Brotherhood”
